Words by Chris Psydiphects
EverydayJunglist: Tell us a bit on how you got your name?
Maztek: I've always been fascinated by all the ancient civilizations especially from Maya, Maori and Aztec. Once I was walking with one of my friends and he told me: "Did you ever hear about the Mazatec?" We had a chat about them and about their rituals and Maztek became my name changing the C with the K because at that time I was into tekno music.
EverydayJunglist: How did SubCulture Recordings come about?
Maztek: Subculture recordings was born as a multi purpose project, we used to organize exhibitions with many artists (painters, vjs, performers and everything concerning arts in general) after few years I was really into the music and into drum&bass and I decided to start the label to release my own things but also stuffs from new producers I like.
EverydayJunglist: How has the scene been in italy for 2013?
Maztek: It is cool but its heavy for the promoters to make huge dnb parties, so nothing compared of what you can see in London or UK in general. Right now the Electro scene here is pretty good and the techno scene never died.
EverydayJunglist: How is your dog (Zuma)?
Maztek: She is fine. She is 9 years old now but still plays like a puppy.
EverydayJunglist: What is a day in life of Maztek consist of?
Maztek: Well I wake up (sometimes early in the morning sometimes late), I have a black coffee (they can be 3 expresso sometimes), take Zuma out for a walk then go to the studio and try to dont loose time doing nothing and finish some beats. Then when I cant do anything more I go out for a predinner, then another walk with Zuma and dinner. If there is something interesting I go out after the dinner, usually during the weekends when I dont have to play around or I just chill with my friends or my lady. After the dinner during the week I use to stay at home and to go to sleep but sometimes I spend all the night in the studio because I'm focused on a beat. During the busy weekends I just use to wake up, go to the airport, go to the hotel, go to the club then back to the hotel and to the airport and so on. During the sunday when I'm at home and I'm not too broken I like to go in the nature with Zuma to relax and get inspired.
EverydayJunglist: Do you watch tv? If not then why?
Maztek: Yes I watch tv but just documentaries or "the walking dead", sometimes I find a movie everything else bores me, and often I find it very stupid.
EverydayJunglist: Do you use any hardware? If so what do you use?
Maztek: I don't at the moment I just use a Sherman filter and a midiconverter for guitar but I want a Virus TI desktop so bad.
EverydayJunglist: Do you play any instuments?
Maztek: Yes I do, I've play guitar since I was a child
EverydayJunglist: What got you into drum and bass?
Maztek: The rock and the punk in it, the energy, the groove, the fact it was the elctronic music closest to my character, the jungle.
EverydayJunglist: Outside influences?
Maztek: I'm into all kind of music (not too much into popmusic actually) and I'm influenced by many things from music, movies, pictures, by anything that stimulates my imagination. About music I really love trip hop, some kind of dubstep and electro, rock, punk, hip hop
EverydayJunglist: What are you proudest of in your career?
Maztek: To play once each 2 months I London at Hardware, to make collabs with many artists I've been following for a long time, to see people that like me and my music and to do what I always wanted to do, to travel. And above all to be myself, still.
EverydayJunglist: Do you have a process when working in the studio?
Maztek: No I don't I just start to focus on something (drums, bassline) and once I have the groove I want I use the technic to finish the tune.
EverydayJunglist: Do you play tracks that you don't like because of their popularity?
Maztek: No I don't sometimes I hear a tune just because of its popularity
EverydayJunglist: If I was in Italy... Where would I go to find drum and bass? What is the longest running night there?
Maztek: There are some cool nights here I would suggest to come to Rome or to Bologna or Milan as well but I don't want to write names because there are many different nights here ,small and huge but don't want to offend anyone. Probably the longest running night is in Turin with the Rollers inc guys, in Milan with the Mother inc guys and in Rome with Soundagate.
EverydayJunglist: Can you break down "Limber" for us? What vst's did you use how did you start it etc...
Maztek: I used Massive and I started with the drums this time, before to come out with the final tune I did like 10 different versions and at the end I found the right groove I had in mind. I spent some days layering drums, then I wrote the main bassline groove and the lead, stab then I did the rest all the atmos and rave pads.
EverydayJunglist: Do you have any new collaborations you are working on?
Maztek: Yes I'm working on a tune with nPhonix and I just got some samples for a collab with Insideinfo. I'm also working on a tune with Memtrix from Lifted and Xtrah. Then I just finished a remix for Optiv and BTK for Renegade Hardware and I have to start 2 remixes for C4C and one for Black Sun Empire.
EverydayJunglist: When will you be coming back to the states?

Maztek: I would chose Audio, The Upbeats, Noisia, Fourward, Mefjus, Phace but also many others
EverydayJunglist: What are your favorite type of needles?
Maztek: The Ortofon Concorde Nightclub S's are good to me
EverydayJunglist: Do you perfer digital(cdjs) or analog(vinyl)?
Maztek: I like both but traveling I prefer cd, at home I prefer Vinyls
